The School of the Madeline, a private K-8th elementary school in North Berkeley, selected Garden Architecture to help them re-envision their existing 1,400 SF asphalt playground into a soft and more natural play and learning setting.

The challenge was to create a flexible space that allowed for play, gathering in small groups and assembling as an entire school community.

Garden Architecture designed a large outdoor amphitheater built into the existing slope, surrounded by soft lawn, gardens and a canopy of trees overhead.  The soulful space is separated from the busier playground by a beautifully built wooden pergola adorned in wisteria that captures and encloses the grassy glen.
