For this project, in an established residential neighborhood in San Jose, we worked in collaboration with KDA Architects to create a series of outdoor spaces grounded in a classic Mediterranean vernacular, yet with a decidedly 21st-century approach.
The heart of the LEED-certified development is a courtyard framed by Crepe Myrtle trees featuring a Romanesque fountain and a Parisian-style kiosk.
The space invites people to sit outside and forms a natural hub for the community. Widened sidewalks allow for seating and encourage people to take a rest outside storefronts. Stone paving and richly colored, drought-tolerant planting complete the picture, and the whole is set off at night by traditional style outdoor lighting. The project will offer new places to eat and shop and a central courtyard that will create a strong sense of place for the whole community.
